Essential Insights on Aging & Dental Health

Regular dental care is essential to maintaining a healthy body: The link between oral and systemic health is well established. Poor dentition is associated with certain chronic diseases and severe health conditions, including respiratory and cardiac illnesses. Conversely, those with emphysema and heart disease see tooth loss two times in magnitude compared to healthy individuals. Many oral conditions are preventable with proper dental care, but systemic diseases such as cancer and ailments of the stomach and gut can manifest in the mouth and should be screened for by oral health professionals. Dr. Travis Smith, D.M.D. earned his doctorate in dental medicine from Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from Widener University. He completed a general practice residency at Hackensack University Medical Center, where he received further training on treating medically compromised and special needs patients. Dr. Smith joined Itani Dental in 2020. He is a member of various dental associations and maintains hospital privileges at Sutter CPMC and Kaiser San Francisco/Santa Clara. Additionally, he serves on the Board of Directors and chairs the legislative committee for the San Francisco Dental Society and is a committee member for the Government Affairs Council at the California Dental Association.
