Fashioning San Francisco: A Century of Style

Featuring one of the most iconic collections of 20th- and 21st-century women’s clothing in the United States, this exhibition at the de Young Museum includes 100 collection highlights, along with local loans of high fashion and haute couture. The first major presentation of the museum’s costume collection in over 35 years, it showcases designs from French couturiers, Japanese avant-garde designers, and other pillars of the fashion industry, including Christian Dior, Alexander McQueen, Christopher John Rogers, Comme des Garçons, and Rodarte. The designs on display, many never shown before, span more than one hundred years from the time of the 1906 earthquake to the present.  

Maureen Murray Fox received her undergraduate degree from the University of California at Davis. She spent more than thirty years working for IBM and held a variety of positions in sales and management, including as Branch Manager of the San Francisco Downtown Office. After retiring from IBM, Maureen decided to deepen her connection to the Fine Arts Museums and learn more about art by training to be a docent. She also serves on the Museum’s Flower Committee and helps decorate the de Young and Legion of Honor once/month. Maureen is a native San Franciscan and is the mother of two daughters; she now has two grandsons who are 6th generation San Franciscans!

The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco (FAMSF) are comprised of two iconic sites in San Francisco’s beautiful parks- the de Young Museum in Golden Gate Park and Legion of Honor Museum in Lincoln Park. As the largest public arts institution in the western United States, the Museums house a world-class collection of 151,000 artworks that span more than 5,000 years.  

The JCCSF and FAMSF have collaborated for over a decade, and we are grateful that FAMSF graciously shares the beauty and history of their collections with the community through inspiring educational docent talks.
