Celebrating 50 Years of San Francisco Jazz

Delight in this vivid audiovisual history of local jazz, from 1916 – 1966 as we move from the Barbary Coast, to Asian nightclubs to the Fillmore District known as the “Harlem of the West” and more.

San Francisco musical culture has long embraced novelty, innovation and individuality. In the lawless Barbary Coast quarter early Jazz flourished before 1920. The Yerba Buena band launched a worldwide traditional Jazz revival in 1940. Asian nightclubs like the Forbidden City provided ethnic entertainers new means of expression. During the 50’s, Club Hangover became the foremost Dixieland Jazz venue on the West Coast while North Beach nightlife fueled an entertainment boom. 

Dave Radlauer is a broadcaster, writer, researcher and storyteller who has been presenting early Jazz and Swing for 40 years. He has garnered six broadcast awards, published 200 articles, donated a jazz collection to the Stanford University Libraries and taught courses for the Osher Institutes at UCLA, UC Berkeley, San Francisco State and Dominican Universities.
