The San Francisco Symphony Presents: A Community Concert

We are delighted to invite you to an afternoon of music and community. Join us for this event featuring an elegant ensemble led by Symphony violinist Melissa Kleinbart, with special guest Cantor Marsha Attie of Congregation Emanu-El. The ensemble, comprised of Melissa (First Violin, Hanrahan Chair), Yuhsin Galaxy Su (Clarinet) and Eric Zivian (Piano) will perform works by Max Bruch (composer of the widely known Kol Nidre piece.) Cantor Attie will join Melissa to perform Hebrew songs for voice, guitar, and violin.  

Melissa Kleinbart, First Violin, Hanrahan Chair 

Melissa Kleinbart, occupant of the Katharine Hanrahan Chair, joined the SFS in 1998 after serving as associate concertmaster with the San Francisco Opera orchestra and assistant concertmaster with the Vancouver Symphony. In addition to solo appearances with the Philadelphia Orchestra, Vancouver Symphony, and New York Symphonic Ensemble, Ms. Kleinbart has been a participant at the Marlboro and Tanglewood music festivals and has performed with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. A graduate of the Juilliard School, she performs and teaches with the San Francisco Academy Orchestra. 

Yuhsin Galaxy Su, Clarinet 

Yuhsin Galaxy Su joins the San Francisco Symphony as Second Clarinet at the beginning of the 2024–25 season. She recently completed a master’s degree at the Colburn School, where she studied with Yehuda Gilad, and before that studied at the Curtis Institute of Music with Anthony McGill. During her time at Curtis, Su was selected for the Curtis 20/21 Ensemble and performed Arnold Schoenberg’s Pierrot lunaire in fully choreographed products at the Kimmel Center, Columbia University, Kennedy Center, and Curtis Field Recital Hall. She has also been a soloist at the Musique et Vin Music Festival and Marlboro Music Festival. She won top prizes in the 2013 and ’14 HSNU Concerto Competition, third prize and audience prize at the International Morningside Music Bridge in Canada, first prize at the Young Classical Virtuoso of Tomorrow Music Competition, and two Chimei Arts Awards. 

Eric Zivian, Piano 

Eric Zivian is a pianist, fortepianist, and composer. He is the founder and Music Director of the Valley of the Moon Music Festival in Sonoma, specializing in Classical and Romantic music on period instruments. In recent years, Eric performed the Mozart C minor Concerto with the Portland Baroque Orchestra and the Beethoven Choral Fantasy with the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra. He has also soloed with the Santa Rosa Symphony and the Toronto Symphony, among others. Eric has performed extensively on fortepiano since 2000. At the height of the pandemic, Eric livestreamed all 32 Beethoven piano sonatas on period pianos. Eric’s compositions have been performed widely in the United States and in Tokyo, Japan. He was awarded an ASCAP Jacob Druckman Memorial Commission to compose an orchestral work, Three Character Pieces, which was premiered by the Seattle Symphony in March 1998. Eric received degrees in piano and composition from Curtis, Juilliard, and the Yale School of Music. He studied piano with Gary Graffman and Peter Serkin and composition with Ned Rorem, Jacob Druckman, and Martin Bresnick. He attended the Tanglewood Music Center as a performer and composer. 

Marsha Attie, Cantor 

Cantor Marsha Attie has been serving Congregation Emanu-El since 1998. She is a composer and recording artist. Her music can be found in songbooks, camps, synagogues and Jewish music compilations around the country. Cantor Attie was ordained from the Academy of Jewish Religion, California where she earned a Masters Degree in Sacred Music. She has also earned a Master of Fine Arts Degree in Dance/Movement Therapy from UCLA. Cantor Attie is interested in the intersection of prayer and the arts and strives to integrate a variety of creative modalities into her spiritual and creative life. She is also a filmmaker and some of her award-winning music videos can be found on YouTube. She lives in the sunbelt of Corte Madera with her partner Doug and their son Marco.
