Tina Turner: Queen of Soul

Author and music historian Richie Unterberger will present a program of film clips featuring soul music great Tina Turner who rose to meteoric success as a solo performer after her tumultuous marriage and musical partnership with Ike Turner ended. 

Focusing on her prime from the 1960s through the 1980s, Richie will spotlight classic performances from soul hits like “It’s Gonna Work Out Fine” and “River Deep, Mountain High” and soul-rock covers like “Proud Mary.” We’ll learn how “What’s Love Got to Do With It” and other songs catapulted her to a phenomenal 1980s comeback as a solo star. 

Rock historian Richie Unterberger is the author of numerous rock history books, including volumes on the Beatles, the Who, the Velvet Underground, Bob Marley, and 1960s folk-rock. He teaches courses on rock and soul music history at several Bay Area colleges. His latest book, San Francisco: Portrait of a City, was published by Taschen in 2022.
