R. Crumb
Unveils his long-awaited Book of Genesis
In conversation with Françoise Mouly
In 1967, a young cartoonist named Robert
Crumb established himself as the father or
founder of underground comics. Crumb’s
tales of misguided souls (
Fritz
the Cat, Mr. Natural, Devil Girl)
vibrate with sexuality, feminist
empowerment, racial tension,
counterculture paranoia and
government repression. Now Crumb
returns to unveil his long awaited
Book of Genesis, a word-for-word
adaptation of the Bible. Though he
first considered drawing God as a
black woman, Crumb claimed, "If
you actually read [the Bible] he’s just
an old, cranky Jewish patriarch."
Françoise Mouly is best known for
her cutting-edge comic art and as
the art editor of
The New Yorker.
