R. Crumb

Unveils his long-awaited Book of Genesis
In conversation with Françoise Mouly

In 1967, a young cartoonist named Robert Crumb established himself as the father or founder of underground comics. Crumb’s tales of misguided souls (Fritz the Cat, Mr. Natural, Devil Girl) vibrate with sexuality, feminist empowerment, racial tension, counterculture paranoia and government repression. Now Crumb returns to unveil his long awaited Book of Genesis, a word-for-word adaptation of the Bible. Though he first considered drawing God as a black woman, Crumb claimed, "If you actually read [the Bible] he’s just an old, cranky Jewish patriarch."

Françoise Mouly is best known for her cutting-edge comic art and as the art editor of The New Yorker.
